Thermal Imaging Camera Benefits You: Termite Detection and Prevention

In Hong Kong, even if you take preventive measures, it's impossible to completely prevent pests from invading if you live in a village house or a suburban area. Termites, in particular, are very elusive and appear throughout the year, making them difficult to prevent. Both the common Odontotermes formosanus and Zootermopsis in Hong Kong require a damp environment to live in and often hatch in places where water seeps in, such as ceilings and bathtubs, and feed on decayed wood or fibrous materials.

Odontotermes formosanus are incredibly destructive and appear in large numbers, often entering homes through walls, ceilings, or floors via the soil, making them common in village houses or suburban detached houses. Zootermopsis primarily feed on damp and rotten wood, making it difficult to avoid even sturdy wooden structures. Kalotermitidae, on the other hand, do not require much moisture and can grow in dry furniture. Termites have a high reproductive ability, are incredibly destructive, and move quickly, so early prevention and control are necessary.

Pest control companies typically use tapping or even breaking walls or floors to locate termites, causing them to hide and making it difficult to clear them completely. Therefore, if you suspect that termites have invaded your home, you can first lower the indoor temperature (25-35 degrees is the comfortable range for termites) to limit their activity. Then, you can use a thermal imaging camera to locate hidden water sources and damaged walls to determine the nest location. Termites also emit carbon dioxide, releasing heat from their digestive system to build high humidity mud tubes. At this point, the thermal imaging camera can reflect the temperature difference in the walls and floors to confirm the location of the termites.

Once the nest is discovered, you can use commercially available insecticide to get rid of the termites yourself. However, if the infestation range of termites is too extensive, it's best to seek help from a certified termite control company. Prevention is key, and using a thermal imaging camera to monitor your home is the best way to deal with termites.
